Covid 19 Laboratory
The CoVID Laboratory is responsible both the PCR and Antibody detection of the Novel SARS-Cov -2 Virus. It is currently the only Laboratory accredited by SADCAS and ICAS for Covid testing in Botswana. Much work is carried out in conjunction with the Nursing and Phlebotomy department to provide fast and efficient delivery of results to clients either for medical or travel purposes. Samples collected across Botswana are always resulted within 24Hrs from time of sample collection.
Quality
Quality in this department is vigorously monitored and hence all the procedures are enrolled in international proficiency testing programs.
Safety of Staff
Sample handling is performed in a biosafety cabinet to protect staff and to avoid contaminating the environment. Staff are provided with full protective gear to conduct collection and testing of samples.
The Bioer Open PCR System
The Bioer Open PCR System provides a simple, efficient and effective technique to isolate high quality DNA/RNA from Combined oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal swabs as recommended by the Ministry of Health Botswana. The amplification of this system is based on a real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test with multiplex PCR-fluorescent probe technology and one-step RT-PCR technology.
The Laboratory is abreast with scientific researches being done across the globe of the Novel SARS-Cov-2 Virus in order to provide standard, effective and efficient resulting of Covid tests with the aim of aiding the fight against Corona.
We can perform a simple screen for the presence of commonly abused drugs, but since we are not a forensic laboratory, the information we provide is intended only to serve in the medical management of patients.
